His compassion, brilliance, and unwavering commitment to patient care leave behind a legacy that will endure for generations.
Born and raised in New Jersey, Dr. Rao’s journey into medicine was inspired at a young age during visits to his grandfather, a well-known general practitioner in India. Moved deeply by those experiences, Dr. Rao dedicated his life to following the same path of service, empathy, and excellence.
Dr. Rao graduated with honors from the University of Michigan, earning a Bachelor of Science in Bio-Psychology. He went on to obtain his Medical Doctorate from St. George’s University School of Medicine. His internship in Internal Medicine at Greater Baltimore Medical Center further strengthened his understanding of the complexities of the human body and reinforced his commitment to improving the quality of life for his patients through thoughtful, evidence-based care.
He completed his residency in Anesthesiology at Albert Einstein College of Medicine/Montefiore Medical Center, where he graduated with distinguished honors in Neurological and Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology. His pursuit of advanced knowledge continued with a fellowship at Mount Sinai College of Medicine, specializing in Interventional Pain Medicine. Dr. Rao later served as an assistant professor at Baylor College of Medicine, where he educated and mentored fellows and residents, shaping the next generation of physicians.
As Medical Director of Pain and Spine Specialists, Dr. Rao was widely respected for his innovative approach to pain management. He was also a passionate advocate for military service members and veterans. While working at Darnall Army Medical Center at Fort Hood, Texas, he played a pivotal role in developing and enhancing the pain clinic for active-duty soldiers suffering from war-related chronic pain. Dr. Rao introduced advanced treatment plans and was the first to implement spinal cord stimulation therapy at Fort Hood, achieving immediate success in treating chronic neuropathic pain.
Dr. Rao was honored to serve wounded soldiers and work alongside Army pain physicians, considering this chapter of his career one of his greatest privileges. His work restored comfort, dignity, and hope to countless patients.
Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Sudhir Rao will be remembered for his kindness, humility, and dedication to service.
